The Standard Jazz Club in Copenhagen is proud to announce the creation its own record label, The Standard Live Recordings, and the launch of their first release "Live at The Standard "(SLR 001) by the extraordinary American singer and music industry legend, Debbie Sledge of the group Sister Sledge - performing a set of jazz and soul classics (including an unplugged remake of her 1979 hit song "We Are Family") with an acoustic trio led by celebrated Danish jazz pianist Niels Lan Doky. The album was recorded live at The Standard Jazz Club in 2015 and features a selection of the best tracks from their 50+ live recorded concerts at the club.
The program concept at The Standard Jazz Club involves long runs, which is highly unusual in our day an age where most venues only do one-nighters. By having the same groups of musicians perform the same program over a long period of time and in the same room (with perfect acoustics and first class instruments and state-of-the-art sound equipment) - the resulting tendency has been continuous snow ball effects of musical excitement, exhilaration and magic. On selected projects each night is recorded multi-track as well as direct to stereo and sold as download links right after the concert, in 24bit/96Khz format (much higher resolution than CD) and the audiences and can download the recording within 45 minutes after the concert is over. In addition, the best tracks from the best nights are selected and post-produced (mixed and mastered) for collector's item vinyl LP releases (with download card for digital copy included inside sleeve).
When we set out to create The Standard Jazz Club, our ambitions were sky high and the vision clear and simple: Only the very best will do. We created a concept where ticket prices are constant regardless of what's on the program, to match our intention of delivering content of the same consistently high level at all times. Needless to say, only the highest caliber of musicians are allowed on our stage, and only to perform unique programs that cannot be heard elsewhere and which are curated and produced exclusively for The Standard Jazz Club by our music director, Niels Lan Doky, the Danish jazz pianist who after more than three decades abroad and an extensive solo career spanning 39 albums to date, returned to Denmark a few years ago and was knighted by HM the Queen of Denmark before co-founding The Standard on the waterfront in downtown Copenhagen with his friend and business partner - the acclaimed food entrepreneur, Claus Meyer, who is mostly known abroad as the founder of the New Nordic Cuisine movement and for his celebrated restaurant Noma (voted World's Best Restaurant in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014).
The Standard, which aside from the jazz club also encompasses 3 restaurants, is built on the same values of combining tradition with innovation. The vision of the jazz club was to give our audiences an experience that they are not used to and that is normally only reserved for musicians and their producers when they are in a top level recording studios, i.e. perfect acoustics, ideal equipment, first class instruments, elite musicians and vocalists. In other words a no compromise environment
In May and December 2015, Debbie Slegde and the Niels Lan Doky Trio played over 50 concerts in total at The Standard Jazz Club in Copenhagen. The 6 songs selected for this LP are highlights from some of the best nights. As you can hear, the music has a unique energy and a group symbiosis rarely heard these days, let alone on record.
The incomparable Debbie Sledge of legendary soul group Sister Sledge has taken audiences by storm since teaming up with acclaimed jazz pianist Niels Lan Doky and his trio. Their intimate musical journey through compelling renditions of soul and jazz classics, as well as lesser known gems, has garnered standing ovations night after night. In an article in Danish newspaper Berlingske Tidende, journalist Kim Flyvbjerg writes "How she succeeded to make Stevie Wonder's up-tempo "Living for the City" segue effortlessly into "My Funny Valentine", and simultaneously deliver one of the most heartfelt renditions of this classic song I have ever heard, is a mystery to me, but it worked; to the point that not a single hair on the back of my neck was lying down."
A highly unusual concert experience with a deeply engaged and open minded musical conversation occurring constantly between all four performers creates a collective experience rather than the conventional vocalist-with-accompaniment setting. Debbie explains: "The great thing about working with Niels is that everything is possible; nothing is excluded". The music is vibrant, emotionally intense and intuitive. Each performer simultaneously listens and communicates eloquently with the others; they clearly display a deep respect and admiration for each other. The audience feels involved, not just as observers, but an integral part of the musical journey. Joining Debbie and Niels on the album are two phenomenal musicians, Canadian bassist Graig Earle and the spectacular young Danish drummer, Niclas Barteleben.
This program has been made possible thanks to the generous support of GANGSTED FONDEN, BECKETT FONDEN, FRITZ SCHUR GRUPPEN and HOTEL HELLERUP PARK. We are deeply grateful and proud to be associated with these patrons of the arts.

ABOUT NIELS LAN DOKY:
A generation younger than artists like Keith Jarrett and Pat Metheny, pianist, composer and Warner Music recording artist Niels Lan Doky is one of the most acclaimed, prolific and unique jazz artists of his time. He has released 39 albums and has collaborated with the greatest artists in jazz and has won countless awards and accolades around the world. When he released his debut album in 1986 the American jazz writer Dan Morgenstern wrote: "There is nothing more encouraging and satisfying than to encounter for the first time a young Jazz musician of real stature, someone who can make you feel that the future of the music is in good hands. There can not be the slightest doubt that Doky's talent is of real significance - that rare thing in the Jazz of our time, an original voice in the great tradition". Since then, Niels Lan Doky has had one of the most extensive and unusual careers ever seen in music, which - aside from performing, arranging, composing and producing music - also has included work as a film director, author and speaker and more. He was Knighted by Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark on April 16th, 2010 and has appeared on bestseller lists in Europe and Asia. He has lived in Boston, New York, Paris and London before returning to his hometown of Copenhagen in 2013. Truly a global cosmopolitan, he has performed for many prominent world figures including Pope Jean Paul II, actor Roger Moore, French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, HRH the Prince Henrik of Denmark, a.o.

Copenhagen Blues Festival - Esbens Just Trio feat. Poul Halberg.
Esben Just (piano/vokal), SP (bas) og Niels Ratzer (trommer) Poul Halberg (guitar/vokal)
Simon Kvamm - Vandmand.

Anmelderne skrev bl.a.
Fed bluesfeeling!"
Bent Stenbakken, Nordjyske Stiftstidende
The Paper Kites (AU).
"I got to the end and thought, I'm never doing that again (...) You're always more melancholy during those hours, but if I could sum up the album it's about what happens when selfishness and love collide", udtaler han
"Complex and delicate, yet with a strength rarely found in such an introspective release, The Paper Kites have managed to create a profound album with twelvefour. Confidence in the delivery of every element means each moment consumes you, and you are taken on a journey that explores the deepest parts of the human soul." - PPCORN
